Regionwide, Southeast Asia’s internet economy is expected to be worth $72 billion by the end of 2018 and will likely hit $240 billion by 2025. More importantly, internet users in the region spend an average of 3.6 hours per day on the internet - more than in any other region in the world. By 2025, the internet economy will expand to account for at least 6% of Southeast Asian GDP, according to Google and Temasek.

Myanmar is also undergoing a connectivity transition, presenting enormous economic opportunities as well as significant challenges. Many experts are projecting internet usage in Myanmar will rise with tremendous improvements in broadband and IT infrastructure making internet services faster and more affordable. The rapid internet penetration, emergence of new payment gateways, mobile payment providers and new start-ups will inevitably boost retail e-commerce in Myanmar. The Government is also proactive in promoting e-commerce development.

According to UNCTAD’s eTrade readiness Assessment on the country, the most important factor for e-commerce development in Myanmar is payments methods for e-commerce (Figure 1).
